Letter from the Chair

I am excited to serve as the NPG Chair for 2017. To have the opportunity to follow the exceptional group of previous NPG chairs and nursing leaders in REI medicine is both an honor and a privilege!

The Nurses’ Professional Group (NPG) was created to support and advance the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s goal to have the greatest global impact on reproductive care. The NPG achieves this through a commitment to education and research, excellence in patient care, and the overall goal of advancement of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) nursing.

Driven by our commitment to education, the members of the NPG Executive Board and committees collaborate to provide a variety of continuing educational opportunities for nurses in REI medicine. These opportunities range from the e-learning series, Nursing Grand Rounds, the Nurse Certificate Course, and educational curricula offered at the ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo. Unique to the NPG, the Nurse Certificate Course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility was created specifically for nurses and nurse practitioners by experts in the field of REI medicine. To date, nearly 500 fertility nurses have received specialized training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) through ASRM eLearn®. Completion of the course provides the opportunity for the practice to be awarded the distinction of the Nursing Centers of Excellence. Practices that have successfully met the eligible criteria receive and display the symbol of excellence on their websites, along with the maxim “A Symbol of Nursing Excellence”.

Another essential NPG focus has been to provide a forum for networking and collaboration among REI nurses. We are excited to be the first ASRM professional group to launch the updated group website, providing partnership, information exchange, and networking in a more user-friendly way. Through this forum and others, we look forward to engaging you to assist in our efforts to improve the standard of excellence for patient care. We welcome your assistance and encourage your involvement.

With the continuous advances in reproductive medicine, it is critical to stay abreast of new technology and treatment modalities, while learning from the leaders in reproductive medicine. For 2017, the NPG has developed an exciting, multidisciplinary program for the ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo, in San Antonio, Texas. The NPG’s pre-Congress course is entitled, Decisions, Decisions: A Framework to Help Patients Confront the Many Tough Choices in Reproductive Medicine. The NPG will host several other symposia and roundtables, including, Changing Culture, Changing Process: Corporate IVF and Patient CareHealth, Supplements, and Adjuvant: The Balance?, and Environmental and Latrogenic Impacts of Female and Male Fertility. As in previous years, we will be co-hosting a joint reception with the Mental Health Professional Group (MHPG), the Legal Professional Group (LPG), and the Association of Reproductive Managers (ARM). Please join us during this reception to network with representatives of other professions in the field of REI medicine.

I am looking forward to seeing you all in San Antonio!
